A client came to me with an aspiration to make a certain aspect of their life more manageable. Together, we were able to translate their aspiration into a clear and measurable goal with concrete action steps and a supporting framework.
While it was clear from the start that this part of their life served a purpose and was something they wanted to sustain, they needed support figuring out how to do just that. We began our work together by
Exploring what it currently looks and feels like to perform activities associated with this part of their life and what purpose they serve
Identifying what makes those activities most or least enjoyable and meaningful
Determining what it truly means for these activities to be manageable and sustainable
By this point in the process, it was clear that these activities could take multiple forms, have different lifecycles, and provide meaning in various ways. It was also clear that activities could be completely different from one another, yet be manageable for different reasons. So our next steps would need to focus on overarching considerations for making a variety of different activities sustainable rather than focusing on making any one kind of activity sustainable.
To this end, we began looking deeper at the questions of
Why do these types of activities matter to the person?
What makes them something worth continuing?
We did this by exploring the connection between this aspect of the person’s life, their natural talents and core values, what energizes them, and what regular practices are important to them. From this exploration, we identified the signals for when a particular activity or combination of activities can be both meaningful and manageable given the person’s talents, values, and lifestyle preferences.
What at first seemed like a question of which types of activities to sustain or pursue and which to end, became a question of how at any given moment the person could determine an activity’s fit with their values and lifestyle. To enable my client to answer this question on their own going forward, I used the signals we identified to
Translate their aspiration into a clear, measurable goal for making this aspect of their life manageable.
Develop a series of reflection questions and a related framework that could be incorporated into their existing journaling and reflection practice.
By using the framework I developed as part of their regular reflection, my client can now determine whether a new activity is worth pursuing and can uncover the signs as to whether a current activity is no longer manageable.
Here’s what my previous client had to say about their experience:
